Tufte’s take on project management visualization, followed by a monumental yet literate 4 year discussion!
“The design of project charts appears to have regressed to Microsoft mediocrity; that is, nothing excellent and nothing completely useless.”

The Master goes on to suggest – wait for it – a timeline. His idea seems to be to display a higher-level, thumbnailed version of the timeline above the detailed view as a navigation device. Users can expand nodes in the detailed view to reveal more tasks, etc.
Way more sophisticated than what we need, but excellent validation and some good ideas. Time to dust off his three classics!
He doesn’t appear to have a blog, but there is a massively active forum on his site that is sure to have more gems for us: http://www.edwardtufte.com/bboard/q-and-a?topic_id=1
